Cemeteries and Obituaries

There are more than 30,000 people buried in Douglas County in 71 cemeteries, large and small.  Cemetery records and maps are available at the Douglas County Historical Society.  The records are available by cemetery, and a database of all Douglas County burials can be searched by last name, if your ancestors were buried in several different county cemeteries.

DCHS has an extensive, easy to search collection of obituaries gleaned from local newspapers going back to the 1800’s.  You can access these obituaries by coming to the Douglas County Historical Society MN Research Library at 1219 Nokomis Street, Alexandria, MN 56308, or by contacting us with a research request at historic@dchsmn.org, or call 320-762-0382.

Douglas County Cemetery Association

The Douglas County Cemetery Association was formed in 1996. The organization focuses on the importance of keeping archival records safe and the new records accurate and up-to-date.  Check out their page by clicking HERE. An interactive online Bing map of cemetery locations in Douglas County can be found HERE.

Findagrave.com Work

An ongoing effort has been made by local volunteers to post those burials in the database at findagrave.com.  Currently, many gravestone photos are being added at findagrave.com. Some graves have no stones, but those grave locations may be available from cemetery maps at the Douglas County Historical Society.

I am looking online for information re the English Grove cemetery in Orange Township, Douglas County. I could only find that the township was organized in 1868. I would like information on the history of English Grove. This cemetery is close to my mother’s farm. My mother is a historian at the Historical Society in Sauk Centre, MN and I am also a member there. Any information I live in Florida. Any information you could provide would be appreciated. Thank You.
