After Sen. Knute and Nicolina Nelson’s daughter Ida died in 1942, the historic Knute Nelson House and surrounding property were donated to the First Lutheran Church in Alexandria, Minnesota, to be used for a nursing and care home. This founding of the Knute Nelson Nursing home was finalized in 1948, when the first residents moved into the big white farmhouse. The Knute Nelson Corporation has since grown, and the white farmhouse was moved across the street and re-purposed as the headquarters for the Douglas County Historical Society MN. Do you enjoy learning about local history? This three part educational series celebrates the 70th anniversary this legacy first made possible by Senator Knute Nelson, his family, First Lutheran Church and the community of Alexandria.
