Contest For Douglas County 5th Graders!

The Douglas County Cemetery Association recently announced their 3rd annual Essay Contest for all Douglas County 5th graders with an October 14, 2015 deadline for submissions.

Cash Prizes of $75, $50 and $25 will be awarded for the top 3 essays from each school, including a home-school category.

Bonus for essays on Veterans:

Veterans groups will select (3) entries written ​about veterans. Authors will be given the opportunity to ​read their essay during the ​2015 Veterans Day Program.Harold F. Johnson footstone

Suggestions for research:

Visit the Douglas County Historical Society at 1219 Nokomis St, Alexandria, MN 56308 and use our resources for information on your chosen essay subject.  We can also suggest a person for you to research. It is recommended that you call ahead. (320) 762-0382.  DCHS will not charge 5th graders a research fee for this project.

Write about an ancestor. Ask family members for suggestions and interview them for information about your subject.

Go to your local cemetery and find a stone that interests you.  Research the person at the Douglas County Historical Society.  We have obituaries, family histories, and military records.
